About Commanders Field

Located on 1600 FedEx Way, Greater Landover, Commanders Field is the proud home of the Washington football team (the Washington Commanders, previously the Washington Redskins). It has played an important role in shaping the region’s football legacy and captivated the hearts of fans for years.

The stadium is instantly recognizable. With sleek lines and an imposing presence, you’ll notice it right away on the approach. Architecturally, the stadium blends modern tech with a classic stadium design. It has a striking façade that is adorned with team insignia and vibrant colors, letting everyone know that it’s the home of the Commanders.

Commanders Field has been meticulously designed to accommodate teams and spectators. It has spacious locker rooms with modern amenities, and meticulously planned playing surfaces. Each detail has been designed to ensure top performance and safety.

Commanders Field is large, with a capacity of 60,500. From 2004 until 2010, it had the National Football League’s largest seating capacity over 91,009. It was, however, reduced to create a more streamlined experience.

Washington Redskins

The home of the Washington Redskins, the FedExField was constructed as a replacement for the Redskin’s previous venue, the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium. In 1997, the venue was opened, named the Jack Kent Cooke Stadium after the recently departed owner of the team, with the stadium site was also known as Raljon as an amalgamation of the first names of Cooke’s sons Ralph and John. In 1999, FedEx purchased the naming rights for $7.6 million per year and the stadium was renamed the FedExField.

In addition to hosting football events, the RedExField also hosts soccer matches, college football games, and big concerts from massive names in music. The list of notable artists to have performed at the FedExField includes the likes of the Rolling Stones, Metallica, Kenny Chesney, the Zac Brown Band, Paul McCartney, Tim McGraw, Eric Church, Guns n’ Roses, Coldplay, Taylor Swift, and Beyonce.

Commanders Field history

Commanders Field is an example of the rich sporting legacy of the state of Maryland. Based in the busy Washington metropolitan area, the Washington Commanders are proud members of the NFL, competing in the fiercely competitive National Football Conference (NFC) East division. They have made Commanders Field their home turf – the battleground for many important football games throughout the decades.

The team was first established by George Preston Marshall, called the Boston Braves, in 1932. Since then, the franchise went through a series of transformations and was known as the Washington Redskins for a long time. This name was recently dropped out of respect to the Native American population of North America and replaced with the Washington Commanders.

In the late 1990s, Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke wanted to create a modern stadium that would surpass the capabilities of the ageing Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Washington D.C. After exploring some options, a decision was made to construct the stadium in Landover, Maryland.

In 1999, Daniel Synder took ownership of the team and stadium, starting a new chapter in their history. From here it was called FedExField due to a partnership deal with the company FedEx. For the longest time, FedExField became synonymous with iconic football moments, hosting some of the most memorable moments in the team’s history.
